11/10/2021 - Even More Prototyping

Today we continued looking for assets and discussed more ideas for the overall layout.

  1. I worked on creating the maze layout in Room #4. I couldn't find actual curved screens, so I opted for thin curved 'walls' that can align to a maze. For some reason, it doesn't allow me to use the right image or pattern for the material on the wall. All it displays is a solid color. I will need to figure out how to get that working, but if not, I'll place the straight screens along the wall for the sake of this project. I also want to add some 'rest areas' in the dead ends of the maze so I'm thinking about what furniture to add that fits the mood of that room. I want to see how far we can take the concept of "being one with yourself."

  2. I finished the tree. Took a bit of figuring out, but I got the tree made. Moving forward, I was hoping to use some of the basis of making the tree for other things within the room. Other than that, moving forward with Monday's re-presentation, I think I might work over the weekend(if i have time) to add some more things and make the room pretty.

  3. I'm finished with the layout plan for room 3! (+ wrote a step-by-step process for executing it in Unity by finals week.) A dense layer of foliage will cover the floors and walls, which should transform the space and eliminate the "gallery box" effect. Then we'll have a "river" cut through the middle, leading the participants on a winding path from the entrance to the exit. (Cindy thought of projecting ripples at their feet for every step they take, so we're looking for a way to incorporate that.) The focal point of the room is a laser-cut tree that glows like the Northern Lights + casts geometric shadows over the entire room. Lastly, clusters of LEDs will be distributed throughout the bushes, gathered in clusters to look like flowers.

Also, after a group brainstorming session, we have a new focal point for the lobby (cascading light poles that hang down from above), curved screens/walls instead of straight ones for room 4, and a final solution for the ceiling. If we ever built this installation in person, we'd rent one giant space with a high ceiling & pipe grid (a.k.a. that support structure suspended above the stage in a theatre), and section off the rooms with temporary walls.

Next class I'll be swapping in Cindy's tree model and covering the floor with some plant models I found on Sketchfab.
