9/22/21 - Finalizing the Idea & Concept Doc

We have finalized our overarching concept for the Rest Immersive Installation and made decisions on what we want the experience to include. We have also moved onto creating our pitch decks to present.

  1. In today’s session, we made the major decisions on the aspects we were still unsure about. We have decided how we want the installation to look and the overall experience flow. The installation will consist of four rooms, each portraying a certain definition of rest. We think it would be best to have elements that are reactive rather than interactive. This way, you can rest, but still have the power to make unique things happen. All of our finalized ideas have been added to our concept doc. We have started putting together our pitch deck for our presentations. We essentially sectioned our concept doc into slides, so our next step is to refine and condense all of those words into something that can be explained briefly when we present. I think it would be good to have a nice design for our deck that portrays our theme and gives the deck some personality. We also found some audio samples that we could use in the respective rooms, so we need to listen to those and agree on which ones we want to include. I feel like audio will be playing a major part in enhancing this experience, so there should be a good amount of effort to curate the best audio selections.

  2. In today's session, our group fully established the layout of rooms of our experience. We added new ideas to each room, while simultaneously expanding on previous ones to enhance the experience. For room 1, we decided to add immense fog to convey the feeling of dreaming. For room 2, we added loop patterns optical illusion of LED lights and mirror illuminations on walls, floor, and the ceiling to convey the visual hallucinations. For room 3, we added sync heartbeat to flowers blooming which can be seen through a smart watch. For room 4, we decided to make this part of the experience reactive. We decide to add layers that form based on how long the visitor's stand still and spatial audio to display everyone's heartbeat out loud. Lastly, We created a PowerPoint with all the ideas we made.

  3. For Wednesday's class, we finalized how each of the four rooms would look, and added visuals to our presentation. We were able to create the presentation simply from using our concept document and making the slides less verbose. Also, we found several audio examples (instrumentals/ambient sounds) for each of the rooms that would best match their aesthetic. We figured out that we would need Processing, Arduino with sensors, projectors, great speakers, projection mapping and RGB+LEDs to make the rooms look great. All four rooms will present four different ways/definitions of resting. The first room places an emphasis on being a set of training wheels to prepare you for the experience having a lack of lights, while the other three rooms emphasize lights and props, and a 4D experience to get visitors to rest.

  4. Major progress today! We switched our concept from interactive to reactive -- so instead of active participation, your presence alone is enough to trigger the effects. This felt like the best way to let visitors zone out and gain a heightened awareness of their thoughts while still making the experience special. All of the rooms have proper names/themes now, and we found a way to incorporate all of the technologies we were interested in one way or another. Out next steps will most likely be sketching the room layouts and discussing the sound design.

  5. We finally got to nailing down the final look of the rooms. We have somehow included everything we talked about, cause unlimited budget. We also discussed the flow of the experience and how the rooms will provide timing for the guests to enter and leave and transition into the next rooms. We also started on the deck/presentation.
